How do I approve a previously denied person who requested membership?

I require a reason from individuals who want to join my group. When members are rejected, they automatically are sent a message to relate their reason for joining to the purpose of the group. When the potential member rephrases their reason for joining in an acceptable way, can I automatically reapprove these members or do they have to apply for membership again?
