Well during their time at hogwarts Sirius, Peter, and James became Animagi to be able to accompany Lupin when he was a werewolf because a werewolf is only dangerous to humans. Sirius was a dog, Peter a rat, and james a stag. A stag has antlers therefore they called him prongs.
